PROJECT HISTORY
HOP’s outreach in Peru began with the donation of school supplies and sewing machines to villages along our trekking routes and grew to host an annual Chocolatada festival in Pashpa, a small village near the trailhead to the Cordillera Blanca’s Ishinca Valley, one of World Wide Trekking’s most popular alpine climbing areas. In 2017, we significantly expanded our efforts in Peru. With the help of Goal Zero, Dell Computers and others, we have constructed a solar-powered computer center in Pashpa and a second center in the nearby village of Huaripampa.
In 2018, HOP returned to Huaripampa to expand the resources available at both the Pashpa and Huaripampa computer centers with a Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning (RACHEL). Developed by the non-profit World Possible, RACHEL is designed specifically for use in schools and education centers located in remote areas. The system connects offline computers to free educational resources including full Pre-school through college level curriculums, thousands of hours of educational videos, tens of thousands of books in English and Spanish, and educational games.
How Can I Help?
Every contribution, no matter the size, helps make a positive impact on the remote village’s access to education.
WWTrek’s Voluntourism Santa Cruz Trek visits both Huaripampa and Pashpa village to not only help out with local projects, but also take in stunning scenery within the Cordillera Blanca mountain range.
Donations go towards maintaining each center’s exterior building, as well as the various computers, and educational tools these communities utilize to sharpen skills for future professional trades. Financial support will also help HOP update school restrooms and wash basins.
- $1500 covers computer center maintenance and educational supplies
- $2000 covers school restroom and wash basin updates
FUTURE GOALS
We are continuing to follow up with our HOP Ambassador, Rodolfo Reyes, to track the impacts of our projects and discover further needs. With the two flagship projects in Huaripampa and Pashpa, HOP hopes to start connecting villages throughout Peru to the rest of the world. It is our hope that with the right tools and education, people in these villages can better equip themselves for the modern world, and improve their community’s health, economy, and future.
