PROJECT HISTORY
In 2015, Dean met a 32-year-old husband and father on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal, named Dharm Veer. Dharm was a cobbler from India who recently relocated his family to Nepal. During their travels, Dharm’s livelihood was taken from him when his cobbler’s tools were stolen leaving the family with no source of income. The family was homeless when Dean met Dharm– who invited him for tea. After their time together, Dean felt moved by their story and wanted to find a way to help them. He donated $500 to help Dharm purchase a new cobbler set– a means of providing for his family again.
Dean also committed to paying for their three oldest children to go to school, as well as contributing to the rent of their home. It takes $3,500 a year to provide reasonable housing and education for three children– giving them a better opportunity to find employment and live a life free of poverty.
HOP continues its support of Dharm Veer and his family and is extremely proud of the longstanding friendship that has been made.
“I can now fix shoes with my heart again,” Dharm told Dean, “especially knowing that my children will be in school, an opportunity I never had while growing up. Before Dean came along, we had nothing, but now we have a roof over our heads and my children will have futures to look forward to.”
Dharm and his wife are proud parents of five beautiful children:
Nwlam – 18
Simram – 16
Rajni – 14
Varsha – 8
Aashish – 6 (son)
